Favorite Routines At the Movies

Summertime, that time of year to sit by the pool or the beach sip margaritas (if you're old enough to drink) and go see the latest summer blockbuster.

Feeling inspired by the slew of summer movies I'm dying to see, for this edition of Favorite Routines, I'm rounding up some past floor routines featuring movie themes for their floor music. The young lady in the below screen shot performed to a very familiar movie theme very recently.

Yao Jinnan, China 2011 World Championships in Tokyo, West Side Story.

The 1961 (and musical of the same name) movie starring Natalie Wood is a retelling of Romeo and Juliet on the streets of New York City. Instead of rival families, the star-crossed lovers, Tony and Maria are from two rival gangs. Yao starts of with the choreographed snaps to the music, which fits very well with the tone. When the music gets to "America," Yao starts to channel Rita Moreno.

Allana Slater, Australia, 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Moulin Rouge

This routine is done to "Tango De Roxane" from the movie Moulin Rouge,  which stars another Aussie redhead, Nicole Kidman. The song is actually a song by The Police, but it has been arranged as a tango for this film. This piece fits Allana very well. She moves to the music and the looks on her face match the tone of this music.

Diana Chelaru, Romania, 2011 World Championships, Fiddler On the Roof

The Romanians are definitely a team of powerful floor workers. The music is a compilation of songs from the movie. This routine is very cute, and Diana's choreography, tumbling and leaps flow very well with the themes of the music.

Jessica Savona, LSU,  2014 NCAA National Championships, Burlesque & Chicago

Jessica knows how to work it and this routine is the proof. Both movies are about a girl who is seeking stardom, Christina Aguilera tries to get her shot of fame by performing in a Burlesque club run by Cher. In Chicago, Renee Zellweger as Roxie Hart gets fame when she shots her lover dead and is thrust into the spotlight via her infamy. Jessica starts off very slow with the music and as the music progresses, she is the star.

Marta Pihan-Kuleza, 2014 European Championships in Sofia, The Pink Panther

This was probably my favorite routine of the European Championships this year. This piece just fits Marta so well. She just slinks around the floor and through her tumbling passes just effortlessly. The 1963 movie starred Peter Sellers as the bumbling Inspector Clouseau, who is trying to catch a jewel thief.  Marta is definitely not clumsy or bumbling, so maybe she's the beautiful woman who is trying to distract Clouseau to keep him from catching the criminal.

Gymnastics Biggest Bad-Asses

While listening to a podcast about badass people (nearly all of whom were men), I decided it was time to celebrate the badass-ness of women. Since this is a gymnastics blog, this article will focus on bad asses in the sport of gymnastics, particularly women in gymnastics. These women are tough for their perseverance, their bravery, and just generally being awesome.
