The Return of Ksenia Afanasyeva

After almost a year and a half out of international competition, Russian gymnast, Ksenia Afanasyeva returned to international competition at the DTB (Stuttgart) Cup.

Ksenia, the 2011 Floor World Champion and the 2013 European Floor Champion, had been out of competition due to an ongoing injury that has plagued her since before last year's world championships in Antwerp, Belgium. Two surgeries and sixteen months later, she is back competition for Russia in the team competition at the DTB Cup, in Stuttgart, Germany.

The following video is of her on floor exercise. She has a new routine with Christina Aguilera's "Show Me How You Burlesque" from the movie, Burlesque. It's her first international competition back, so her routine is still rough around the edges. She opens with two whips to a triple full (under rotated, but still). She still has her beautiful turns and she has some sass in her dance. Ksenia's also darkened her blond hair and is sporting a new tattoo on her lower neck/upper back.
Not bad for her first routine back on the international scene.

Since this is a gymnastics blog, this article will focus on bad asses in the sport of gymnastics, particularly women in gymnastics. These women are tough for their perseverance, their bravery, and just generally being awesome.
