Cal @ Arizona State Live Blog

I'm concluding this gymnastics weekend with some Pac-12 action with Cal at Arizona State.

ASU has seen a massive improvement this season, currently ranking # 14 after three weeks of competition versus their 41st place final finish in 2017.

The Twitters have great things to say about ASU this season and their newest star is Cairo Leonard-Baker who was named PAC 12 Freshman of the Week.

First rotation - ASU is on vault, Cal is on bars.

Kaitlyn Szafranski leads off ASU on vault  - FTY small hop, arms a bit bent on entry. 9.75

Sofie Seilnacht leads of Cal on Bars -  giant 1/2  + pike jaeger + bail,  Good HS position,  blind change + back 1 1/2 flyaway. 9.8

Jessica Ginn VT ASU -  FTY, good height, step back on the landing. Good form in air. 9.825

Kyana George UB -  tkatchev, short on that last KCHS bail, falls on HS, stalder + full in,  small step 8.95

Anne Kuhm ASU -  beautiful FTY, nice height, hop on landing. 9.8

Toni Ann Williams UB Cal -  jump KCHS on hb, hindorff clear hip + bail, DLO, small foot shuffle back, good height. 9.85

Cairo Leonard-Baker VT - FTY, nice height, just a small step on the landing. Lots of distance. 9.85

Alma Kuc UB -   glide KCHS shap + pak,  1/2 pirouette, full in,   Eagle grip giant, short and lands on her knees. 9.275

Morgan Wilson VT - FTY, very big height, distance, beautiful flare, just small hop on landing. 9.85

Nina Schank UB - toe shoot to HB,  blind change + pike jaeger, beautiful + bail,  nice HS position, perfect DLO, stuck. 9.9

Katelyn Lentz VT ASU -  FTY, bit off to the side, but solid vault, good distance, piked down on the end 9.775

Yuleen Sternberg UB -   toe on + ray, lots of height, bit close though, bail, good HS,  bit short on that HS, giant full + double back, small foot shuffle. 9.9

Morgan Wilson ASU UB -  hecht, giant full + blind change + jaeger, bit far out and can't catch in time. Bail,  toe circle,  giant full + double back. 9.0

Cassidy Keelen VT -  NICE FTY, bit off to the side, hop on the landing. bit piked on landing. 9.8

Morgan Hart UB -  blind change + jaeger, little close, caches w/ bent arms, bail, DLO, stuck. Some leg seps in air. 9.85

Sylvie Seilnacht VT - FTY, stuck cold. great height and distance. Should get a good score and she does a victory lap. 9.9

Ashley Zfaranski UB -  shap + pak,  1/2 pirouette, DLO, small step 9.8

George VT - FTY, lots of power, small hop on landing. 9.85

Nichelle Christopherson UB -  jump to HB KCHS,  toe on + ray,  bail, nice hs, toe shoot, full in, small side hop. 9.875

Arianna Robinson VT  - FHS fro pike, just a bit short and takes a small step. 9.825

Anne Kuhm UB -  toe on + shap,  jaeger, bail, bit short on the last HS, DLO, so far from the bar, Stuck. 9.85

Wiliams VT - huge FTY, hop on the landing, but lots of amplitude. 9.85

Cairo-Baker UB -  ray nice HS _ bail,  toe shoot to HB, full in that is practically to Jupiter, stuck. 9.95

Time for the third rotation, Cal is on floor and ASU is on beam. Really excited to see the progress this team has made just in the past few weeks!

Justine Callis leads off beam for ASU -  BHS + BHS + LOSO, very lovely,  full turn,  spl + double stag ring,  fhs sit on her knees, beautiful scale,  so elegant,  side aerial + back full, small hop. Gorgeous routine. 9.825

Sofie Seilnacht leads off floor for Cal -  fro lay + rudi,  illusion turn, cat leap + tour jete 1/1,  1 1/2 + fro 1/2 + straddle jump, 1 1/2 + front pike. 9.825

Leonard-Baker BB -  straddle jump + LOSO,  full turn,  beat + straddle 3/4,  BHS + LOSO, round off + 1 1/2, stuck. 985

Sternberg FX - double pike,  tour jete 1/1,  double back, solid landing,  very clearn,  1 1/2 + barani, bit under rotated, but pulls it around. 9.65

Heather Udowich BB -  front aerial, bit of a wobble,  front aerial + BHS, sw + spl,  full turn,  cat leap + front toss,  side aerial + back full, solid landing. 9.65

Robinson FX -  (Amanda is laughing at Jim for calling hair ribbons "Scrunchies" ) dbl arabian, bit short,  1 1/2 + front pike, solid, tour jete 1/2, bit under 180 in the split position,  clean double pike to finish. 9.85

Lentz BB -  BHS + LOSO,  sw + straddle 1/4,  gainer LOSO,  full turn,  cat leap + sw side,  round off + 1 1/2, small step.  9725

Keelen FX -  dbl pike, chest down on landing,  sw ring + sw side + wolf 1/2,  FHS + fro lay + fro 1/2,  FHS + rudi, bit sideways on the landing 9.725

A. Zfaranski BB -  fro aerial + korbut flip,  side aerial, small wobble, but snaps arms down fast enough that it doesn't matter, sw + spl,  Rufolva,  full turn, leans to side a tiny bit.  gainer full dismount, 9.875

George FX -  FHS + front 2/1, sw ring + sw 1/2, nice,  Fro tuck + rudi,  double back, lands a bit low in the knees, saves it ok. 9.825

Christopherson BB -  full turn,  front toss + Korbut flip,  beat + double stag ring,  spl leap,  round off + 1 1/2

Williams FX -  DLO, huge,  sw side + popa, huge amplitude, splits over split,  front lay + front full,  doesn't control the step out as perfectly as she could,  clean, big double pike. 9.975.

Sofie Seilnacht leads off the rotation on beam for Cal -  BHS + LOSO, is off and she falls,  beat + dbl stag ring,  sw + spl,  side aerial + 1/1 twist, stuck.

"Liz has been working on some stand up!" Jim Watson referring to Liz Crandall-Howell loosening up the girls before they start by making them laugh. Jim's got tons of corny dad jokes tonight.

Christopherson FX ASU -  double pike, very clean,  just stays in bounds, huge double back,  wolf full + popa + shushunova sw + double stag jump,  1 1/2 + front lay,  9.825

Chelsea Shu BB -  front aerial + BHS, off balance but saves it,  sw 1/2,  full turn, side aerial + 1/1 twist. 9.8

Lentz FX -  double pike, solid landing,  sw side + popa,  1 1/2 + front full,  double back, very clean, solid landing. 9.825

Ok. There was a guy in the background in a purple shirt doing the choreo with the gymnasts and Amanda Borden just said it was the student section. The coaches are teaching them the choreo to basicially market the meet.

George BB - wolf turn double full,  solid,  front aerial, she's totally off balance and she falls,  sw + spl,  fro aerial again, wobbles, bhs,  round off + double back, stuck landing. 9.15

Ginn FX -  front tuck + double back,  sw side + popa, lots of amplitude,  1 1/2 + front 1/2, stuck cold,  double pike, went OOB... or not. Someone put two white tape lines on the mat. 9.825

Keelen BB -  BHS + LOSO, solid, full turn, has a bit of a wobble, but covers with some clever choreo... falls on the front aerial. it's contagious. I threw my hands up in disgust. round off + 1 1/2, small hop. 9.075

K. Zfaranski FX -  big double pike,  beautiful double back, so high  tour jete + popa, bit slanted in the air, but nice amplitude.  1 1/2 + front layout, perfect.

ASU is on FIRE!!!!!!

Alicia Gallarzo BB full turn, BHS + LOSO, takes a few steps out,  sw + spl,  round off + 1 1/2. It's a hit, and Cal desperately needed that. 9.8

Kuhm FX - wrong music starts and then they're trying to find the right music,. Go time,  whip + doubel back, huge air, FHS + fro 1/1 + fro tuck, bit short but saves it, sw 1/2 + sw,  2 1/2 twist to finish. BAM! She's clutch.

Williams BB -  front tuck + standing LOSO,  sw + sw, small balance check, saves it,  full turn,  gainer pike dismount, 9.9

Leonard- Baker FX  -  huge double back, practically out of this solar system.  beat jump full,  1 1/2 + front full,  perfect double pike to close the meet for her and ASU. 9.925

BAM! Chest bump with Jessica Ginn to celebrate.

Final Scores
ASU 196.800, floor 49.250 - that's the highest score ASU has put up since 2006!!!! That's freaking AWESOME!!!!
Cal 194.850, beam 47.775
